Remote Key Fob Repair
Modern vehicles are equipped with remote controls that can be used to lock, unlock and start the vehicle. As with any high-tech piece equipment, there could be issues.
Most of the time, these issues are simple to fix. You can reset it by following the instructions in the manual of your owner.
Check the Battery
The battery in a key fob powers the remote control function. It's a small and inexpensive part that should be replaced frequently to ensure the fob's functionality. However, in addition to the battery, there could be other reasons your key fob isn't working. Physical damage, water exposure or internal component malfunction could be the reason. Regardless of the cause, if your key fob isn't responding it's time for a replacement battery.
First, ensure you have the correct size battery. Almost all modern key fobs utilize a common three-volt CR2032 battery that's easily available at many stores. Most of these batteries are engraved with the size on one of the edges of the fob. You can identify the kind of battery your car requires by searching for the brand name.
Take your key fob apart carefully and take out the original battery. Take a photo of the inside of your fob to ensure that you put it back together correctly. This simple step can save you from having to purchase a replacement fob because you made an error when making it.
It is important to be aware that certain key fobs come with an additional mechanical key, also known as an emergency blade. The key blade is inside the key fob, and it allows you to unlock the driver's door of your car in the event that the remote control is not working. To access the blade of the key, you must find the notch in the middle of your fob. The notch is usually a circle hidden by the plastic casing of the fob.
If you're looking to test the battery voltage with extra care, you can use the multimeter. The majority of modern key fobs come with built-in voltmeters, but you can get a multimeter from many hardware stores for a few dollars. In general, the battery should read 3.0 volts or more. If it is below that level, it could indicate a battery that is in its final stages and must be replaced immediately.
Check the Buttons
Car key fobs may seem to be nothing more than high-tech items for convenience however, they're not indestructible. Remotes can stop functioning after a certain period of time, especially if they are used often or if they have been subjected to physical abuse. In most cases it's simple to spot an issue and fix it with the remote fob. Most of the time, all that is needed is an upgrade to the battery.
Modern car key fobs have multiple buttons that perform different functions. For instance, they can unlock and lock the doors, activate the panic button and open the trunk. When the button is pressed the fob sends out the radio signal using the code that is interpreted by a receiver located inside the car. Some fobs also come with a button that will start the engine, which is particularly useful in cold winter mornings and hot summer days.
The buttons on a key fob can be reset by taking it apart and checking that they are not broken or stuck. Key fobs aren't designed to be disassembled however, the battery connectors on a key fob may get loose over time. If the buttons' contacts have been disconnected from the circuit board, a simple solder job can be enough to get them back on track and restore the fob to full function.
Additionally, if a fob has been damaged or dropped in any other way, the buttons could be damaged or out of alignment, or misaligned in any way. These issues are more difficult to fix by yourself. However a local auto shop can fix them using the right tools and experience.
It's always an excellent idea to have an extra key somewhere in case one that you frequently use fails to function. This can prevent you from being stranded without your keys or needing to pay a significant amount of money to have the vehicle towed back to the dealer. It is also advisable to examine your car insurance policy or car club membership extended warranty coverage to see whether it will cover the cost of replacing or programming an entirely new fob.
Check the Casing
It's not unusual for a key fob to get wet, be it from a pool, a storm or even your washing machine. The moisture that is resulting can cause a variety of malfunctions within the electronic. It's good to know that you can save a key fob from destruction by following a few easy steps and drying it thoroughly.
The first step is to ensure that the buttons are functioning properly. This usually involves taking them out and cleaning the buttons. If the buttons do not pop back in or feel stuck, it's probably time to replace the remote.
You should also check the case to make sure nothing is interfering with the function of the key fob. Remove the case using tweezers and take out the battery. Do not disassemble the circuit board or antennas. They have electric current flowing through them that keeps the key fob programmed to your car, and should you disrupt these circuits, you'll need go to a dealer or choose an Interstate All Battery Center location to re-program the device.
After you've removed and replaced your battery, it is recommended to dry the key fob out by placing it into an airtight bag that contains silica gel packets. This will help prevent future problems with moisture and will make your key fob more durable.
If key repair service fob isn't functioning properly, you'll have to visit a dealer or an independent shop that specializes in your particular make and model of vehicle. They can reprogram the key fob of your specific vehicle and hopefully restore its full functionality.
If all else fails then you can purchase an additional keyfob online, or at your local NAPA Auto Parts shop. These do-it yourself remotes are similar to the original fob, but are cheaper. They can be easily connected to your vehicle with simple instructions. NAPA offers a number of replacements that can be programmed in a matter of minutes.
Check the Connections
The key fob you have may cease to function even though it is still programmed to work for your vehicle. This could be due a variety of reasons, such as broken battery terminal contacts or buttons. If this is the case, you might be capable of fixing it yourself by performing basic maintenance.
The first thing you have to do is ensure that your backup remote can lock and unlock the doors of your car. If it can't it, then you might have an issue with your primary remote. If not, then it's time to try replacing the battery in the backup remote.
Before replacing the battery It's a good idea to pull off the key fob and conduct an examination of the circuit board. You'll need to ensure that there aren't any broken solder joints that must be replaced with solder. After you've finished you can replace the battery on your key fob and reassemble it.
After you have replaced the battery and reassembled the key fob, you should test the connection to your vehicle. Put a flathead mini screwdriver into the notch at the bottom of the key fob. You can then pry apart the two halves of your key fob and gently remove the circuitboard. Make sure to insert a brand new CR 2032 3V battery, ensuring that it is placed with the negative side facing downwards. Once you've successfully inserted the circuit board, rebuild the key fob and try again.
If this doesn't work, then you may have a larger issue. If this is the case, contact your dealer or a service shop that is specialized in your car's make. They can determine the problem by using a radio-frequency tester a device which determines if your key fob transmits an electronic signal to the computer in your car.
